5/2/2023 0 Comments Arch tigervnc![]() ThinLinc is mostly based on FOSS (specially TigerVNC and noVNC) and the fully featured version is free for up to 10 simultaneously connected users. But as I said, it didn't work well over a poor network. I got working this setup with VirtualGL + turbovnc (but I think TigerVNC should work. Once you setup VirtualGL, you will need to use vglrun startkde instead of exec. X2Go does pretty much the same, but it is based on the NX protocol. If you use VirtualGL then all rendering will be passed to your actual GPU improving performance greatly and theoretically it should allow even playing games (I haven't tested that). ![]() Since you're trying to create a headless remote desktop, I think that it suits you well and better than standard VNC because it can keep your session working even if you disconnect from it (I don't know if there's a way to keep a VNC session open and reconnect to it after). ThinLinc is based on VNC protocol, but is a lot more easy to install/configure, works on top of the SSH port and includes sound redirection by default (sound redirection is not part of VNC protocol, but ThinLinc encapsules everything in one thing). On lower latency/better bandwidth both were fine with just a small difference, but over a problematic network, ThinLinc kept its quality while X2Go started suffering. Both are great piece of software, but ThinLinc had a better image quality and responsiveness over the poor wifi network signal than X2Go. So, I started first using X2Go and then moved to ThinLinc. The arch height measure is less accurate, which could limit its use in some. If I may suggest an alternative (or two), during the start of the pandemic lockdown I had to share one computer with both my wife and nephew and the result was that VNC was not ok for daily work because the wifi signal was so weak that VNC response time and image quality was very poor (and we had no sound). TigerVNC provides the levels of performance necessary to run 3D and video. I needed this "virtual desktop session mode" because sometimes my father was using the machine phisically. It seems that VNC Server has a lot of different settings that may need to be configured to get it working fine and secure. But by that time I was using openSUSE, which has a lot of tools ready to help to deploy things like that. Now in the case of those who are users of Arch Linux, Manjaro, Antergos or any system derived from Arch. In the past I worked once with VNC when I broke my ankle and had to figure out how to access the machine upstairs without all the pain that was to get to the room where the computer was. sudo dpkg -i VNC-Viewer-6.18.625-Linux-圆4.deb. In your description of "headless remote desktop", you should use the former one, so, each new logged in user would start a display on port 5900+n (i.e. Did you manage to get it working? I guess that VNC has two ways of working: one that mirrors the local screen and one that will start a new virtual desktop for each logged in user.
